I had a strange day yesterday and we didn’t end up posting anything. My partner woke up with an abcess and had to make an emergency appointment with the dentist, so with him dosed up with pain killers we headed into town to get some Christmas shopping done (and dodge the zombie shoppers). When we arrived back there was a message on the phone from one of our neighbours, so I phoned her back and she said could I drop round as she had something for me. That something turned out to be a big bag of old postcards, her husband who wasn’t so much of a collector died earlier this year, in his younger years he liked to travel and he bought the postcards as souvenirs, others were sent to the couple by people they met on their journeys. The most interesting postcard was one from South Africa from the 60’s which shows a whaling ship towing at least 8 fin whales. whaling postcards are rare, I will be scanning it and posting it. A grim reminder. It was quite a dull day so we decided to put on the main lounge light…..Bang the whole light fitting exploded, right. where’s the phone number for the electrician. He’s not able to come for another week, so we sort out some lamps. Then I decided to switch the computer on….. No internet, or rather the sites I could get on were not working. Uhoh there must be a big story breaking somewhere. the last time this happened it was Michael Jackson. Sure enough the news broke about Nelson Mandela. That guy did not stop campaigning about so many important things, and the bar in the university I went to was named after him. So we watched some of the tribute stuff on TV, but it was on a loop. We had just purchased a DVD of the 70’s horror series ‘The Dead Of Night’ (on BFI) so we watched all of that.
